Though 2011 fruit and vegetable garden trends include new varieties developed for small gardens as well as to offer higher yields, gardeners will also find veggies in new colors

Tomato lovers, for example, can opt for two new pear tomato varieties in green and chocolate colors sold exclusively by Terroir Seeds LLC of Chino Valley, Ariz., home of Underwood Gardens.

The new varieties, available in December, according to Underwood Gardens, are certified organic, indeterminate tomatoes that are said to ripen with 65-80 days.

The green pear tomato, developed by one of company’s growers, “has a base of light green that shines through an overlay of translucent creamy yellow.

“The final color is almost even between a yellow and a green tomato,” the Underwood Gardens’ product description explains.

Regarding flavor, the company describes the green pear tomato as having a “fruity, meaty and substantial flavor followed by bright, sweet notes and a long sustained finish.”

Described as a tomato that will “grab your attention and taste buds,” the green pear tomato is also said to be “prolific and weather tolerant.”

The chocolate pear tomato, also developed by a Terroir Seeds’ grower, “has a base of traditional light tomato red swirled with an overlay of both green and brown hues, very reminiscent of the luscious Black tomatoes,” the product description notes. “The overall color is deceptive, as it is not red, green or brown, but all three.”

Just like the green pear tomato, the chocolate pear tomato is described as a “prolific and weather tolerant” tomato variety.

But the chocolate pear tomato is said to have a “slightly tart, then slightly sweet” taste “with a very full and rich tomato flavor that bursts in the mouth,” according to the product description. “It combines the richness of a paste tomato with the sweet and tart profile of an heirloom slicer.”

Underwood Gardens writes that the chocolate and green pear tomatoes, just like numerous pear tomato varieties, can tolerate a mixture of weather conditions and work well in small gardens or for growers selling at markets or offering community supported agriculture.

Both new varieties will be available Dec. 15.

Underwood Gardens is a family-owned, independent heirloom seed company, offering heirloom vegetable, herb and flower seeds for home gardeners and small growers. The company specializes in heirloom and open-pollinated seeds, soil building and seed saving.
